| Renton-built Boeing B-29A-5-BN Superfortress serial number 42-93844, the 1st block 5 A model built, in flight with bomb bay door open, over the nearby Cascades. 42-93844 was delivered to the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) on July 17, 1944. This was the 21st of 1,119 B-29As to be built at Renton. It was the 1st B-29A to have rubber deicing “boots” removed from the leading edge of the wing to speed production time. All subsequent B-29s deleted deicing boots. After trials, 42-93844 was assigned to the 6th Bomb Group on Tinian. She flew combat missions over Japan named “Anna Belle” and returned to the United States. She was assigned to the 242nd Army Air Force Base Unit, Grand Island Army Airfield, Nebraska. On June 27, 1949, she was reclaimed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. | |
