| Wehrmacht General der Panzertruppe Freiherr Hasso Eccard von Manteuffel (January 14, 1897 – September 24, 1978) speaks with Wehrmacht Generalmajor Karl Lorenz (January 24, 1904 – October 3, 1964) and Wehrmacht Generalmajor Willy Langkeit (June 2, 1907 – October 27, 1969). The 1st of 2 views. See also wwii1754.jpg. Langkeit commanded his own Kampfgruppe as part of the Panzergrenadier Division Großdeutschland; Lorenz was the Division Commander. Manteuffel held command of Panzergrenadier Division Großdeutschland from February 1, 1944, until September 1, 1944, when he was appointed to lead 5th Panzer Army in Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein (“Operation Watch on the Rhine,”) which would counterattack Western Allied forces through the Ardennes Forest in Belgium beginning on December 16, 1944. In this conference in Ukraine, the officers are discussing the collapse of German resistance in Operation Bagration, which forced a transfer of the depleted Panzergrenadier Division Großdeutschland from Ukraine to East Prussia. The Division was nearly destroyed there by November 1944. | |
