Japanese map of Manchukuo, April 1935, New Youth Magazine, Hakubunkan Publishing After the conquest of Manchuria in 1931, the Japanese Army renamed it Manchukuo and placed the Chinese Emperor, Pu-Yi, on the throne. Pu-Yi was a puppet, controlled by the Japanese Army. The Army set up its own corporations to exploit the resources of Manchukuo, and began to ship both natural resources and finished products to Japan.
