| Reichsjugendführer (“Reich Youth Leader”) Artur Axmann (February 18, 1913 – October 24, 1996) photographed during his trial before the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. Arrested in Lübeck in December 1945, Axmann was plotting a Nazi underground movement that was discovered by the United States Army. He was released in October 1946. Axmann was detained in July 1947 and interrogated again. He was held in Nuremberg-Langwasser Prison from June 1948. The International Military Tribunal indicted him that July. He was not called to give a closing statement. His trial concluded in October 1949; he was found to be a “major offender” and sentenced to 3 years and 3 months. He was not found to have committed war crimes. He worked as a coffee salesman after his incarceration. On August 19, 1958, Axmann was convicted of “incitement of the youth.” He is ordered to pay 35,000 Deutschmarks. He was found not guilty of war crimes. He sold real estate to pay the fine. His 2nd company failed in 1960 due to a lack of clients. He retired from a 3rd trading company in the Canary Islands in 1976. He began to write his memoirs in 1985, and it was published in German 10 years later. He died in Berlin a year later. | |
