Image Information
Original caption: “La Vie a Londres pendant la guerre. [‘Life in London during the war.’] Vue d’un V-1 dans son vol. [‘View of a V-1 in flight.’]” Fieseler Fi-103, Vergeltungswaffe 1 (“Vegence Weapon 1”) “buzz bomb,” “doodlebug,” “robot bomb,” falls on London in the Summer of 1944. Almost 30,000 V-1s were produced; by March 1944, each was manufactured in approximately 350 hours (including a 120 hours for the autopilot), at a cost of just 4 percent of a V-2, which delivered a comparable payload. Approximately 10,000 were fired at England; 2,419 reached London, killing about 6,184 people and injuring 17,981. The greatest density of hits was received by Croydon, on the south-east fringe of London. Antwerp, Belgium, was hit by 2,448 V-1s from October 1944 to March 1945.
