| Original caption: “Back Up Eisenhower with More G-E Production.” This illustration by artist Ernest Hamlin Baker (May 5, 1889 – November 17, 1975) was taken from TIME Magazine’s Movember 16, 1942, color cover. Supreme Commander Allied Expeditionary Force of the North African Theater of Operations (NATOUSA) General Dwight D. “Ike” Eisenhower (October 14, 1890 – March 28, 1969) had just overseen the Torch landings in North Africa. General Electric had a major public relations division that produced dozens of posters and brochures for its huge number of employees. General Electric made turbosuperchargers for fighters and bombers, radio components, howitzers, jet engines, and rocket igniters, among other things. It was the 9th-largest contractor during the war. The Nazi Germans seized General Electric’s European corporations and compelled them to manufacture radios and weapons with slave labor. How complicit General Electric was in cooperating with the Nazis is still debated to this day. General Electric and other corporations encouraged their workers to recognize that “Quantity plus Quality = Victory,” which was often shortened to “Q+Q=V.” This same illustration of Eisenhower was used by the American Red Cross in a March 1945 national pledge drive that encouraged civilians to give plasma and donations. Baker illustrated more than 300 covers for TIME and Fortune magazines. | |
