| Deutsches Afrika Korps (DAK) troops advancing into the desert wear tight-fitting goggles to protect their eyes from flying sand churned up by wind and vehicles. 4 soldaten of the Afrika Korps appeared in this image from the Nazi German propaganda magazine Signal. The Obergefreiter (“Lance Corporal”) wears captured British gas goggles, which were popular with the Germans for their tight fitting feature. Others wear sunglasses. 1 has binoculars. German binoculars were much sought after by British troops, which considered them superior to their own. They all wear the Afrika Korps M40 tropical field cap, made of heavy cotton, designed in 1940 and issued to Nazi German soldaten through May 1943. This image was the cover of the July 15, 1942, issue of Newsweek. | |
