| Greek commandoes of the Sacred Squadron eat with their caique – Greek fishing schooner – behind them. The Levant Schooner Flotilla (LSF) and the Special Boat Squadron (SBS) used inlets in Turkish waters for hiding from Nazi German patrols. While the Turkish Government knew the allies were using their territory for operations, they allowed it, since the Axis was losing the war. The caiques were heavily armed, with heavy Vickers machine guns, captured 20 millimeter (0.78 caliber) anti-aircraft guns, and Vickers “K” guns as armament. They had Matilda tank engines instead of their regular engines, which allowed for silent running at half throttle. The flotilla’s commander was the eccentric Lieutenant Commander Adrian Seligman (November 26, 1909 – August 6, 2003). He used the caiques to run commandoes in hit-and-run operations across the Greek islands. | |
