Crete April 27 - May 31, 1941

The collapse of Greek resistance on the mainland and the evacuation of British Commonwealth forces left Cretan Commander New Zealand General Bernard C. Freyberg with the knowledge that the island would be the next logical strategic target. Crete’s geographic location put its three airfields within striking distance of the Rumanian oil fields, cut the Aegean off from the Mediterranean, and provided a base to strike at Italy, North Africa, and Greece.

Bismarck’s Atlantic Sortie May 20-27, 1941

In the Spring of 1941, air attacks on England had failed to break the will of her population to carry on the war. Heavy combat in the Atlantic focused on Kriegsmarine U-boats attacking merchant ships bound for England and attempting to starve the British into submission. Except for a few exceptions, German capital ships had not entered the Atlantic to raid convoys. That would change with the sortie of the battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen in May 1941.

The War Expands Around The World

Hitler begins an invasion of Russia, violating his own strategy. England survives losses in Greece and Crete, but wins against the Italians in Libya until the Germans arrive. At the end of the year, attacked by the Axis, the United States joins the war.

Attack On Leningrad (2009 Film)

Gabriel Byrne and Mira Sorvino star in another love story about two western journalists that are trapped in the siege of Leningrad in 1941. IMdB's plot description, written by the director, make it seem really over the top romantic. I have trouble believing all these people were worried about romance when they were starving to death. If the plot summary turns out to be historically accurate, these Westerners must have seemed very self-involved and silly to the Leningrad citizens.
