This rather blurry view shows the 18th Century construction technique for most of the original tunnel complex. This tunnel, which allows access from the surface to the Casement level, has been lined with bricks to keep debris from falling from the soft chalk substrate. Later tunnels would have corrugated steel along their walls. I doubt the lighting was as good in World War II as in this photo, and imagine what it was like to move about in these tunnels before electricity. You would have to bring a lantern whereever you went and detail a soldier to check the kerosene lamps every hour. Right-click and choose "view image" to enlarge.
