The Spitfire’s development from racing seaplanes was evident throughout the evolution of the fighter. The original prototype had a two-bladed, fixed pitch propeller. The Mark 22 had a five-bladed, variable pitch propeller. This meant the pilot could change the angle at which the propeller bit into the air, greatly increasing the performance of the aircraft. Most biplanes had fixed-pitch propellers; most monoplanes of the 1940’s had variable pitch propellers.

K5054, the original Spitfire prototype in 1936. More than 20,300 Spitfires of all types were built through 1952. The last version was the Mark 24.

A Mark 22 Spitfire in flight. The Mark 22 was a significant change from the K5054, almost a completely new aircraft. 287 were built.
