The forward section held the powerful Griffon engine, which replaced the ubiquitious Merlin engine in the original Spitfires. I don’t think most people realize that the British Spitfire and Lancaster, and the American Mustang, all used variants of the same engine. the distinctive Spitfire wing is behind the fuselage. You can see the cut outs for the wheels. Because the Spitfire had a narrow track carriage, many inexperienced pilots had trouble manuvering over forward dirt airstrips.

You can see a closeup of the Merlin engine from the Lancaster at IWM Duxford. The Merlin was made in the United States as well, which powered Canadian-built Lancasters and many other American aircraft like the North American P-51 Mustang.
