A new World War II movie is being planned in Australia. This will recreate the city of Darwin from the depression through the bombing in 1942. More information is available through our upcoming movies page.

LAST ESSEX-CLASS CARRIER SUNK AT SEA

Ex-USS Oriskany, the last Essex-class carrier built (laid down 1944, completed 1950, served in Korea and Vietnam) was sunk as a reef on May 17. The US Navy has photos.

I recently helped locate Paul Smatlak, a veteran of the Hurtgen Forest battle in 1944, and return a photograph of him in a foxhole during the battle. Mr. Smatlak, a medic, received the photo from Ms. Carole Jones of Australia.

Ken Watanabe, who is playing Tadamichi Kuribayashi, the commander of Iwo Jima in the new film by Clint Eastwood, recently gave an interview about his role and how he hopes the film will educate young Japanese about the war. Check out the upcoming movies page.

I've been working on a new website, Cancer-map.com, where you can post your survival stories and regional/local resources for battling cancer.

As some of you know, I recently lost my materal grandmother to cancer, and my paternal grandmother died of breast cancer in 2002. I hope that you will visit and post your own story of battling or surviving or dealing with cancer.

Another month, another update. Today’s update answers several questions on the forums.

The role of HMS St. Angelo in the invasion of Sicily is discussed here. If anyone has more information about the Malta base HMS St. Angelo during the Sicily invasion, forum member djwc would like you to post.

Combined Operations in the Indian Ocean near Ceylon called “Force Overt” operated between 1941 and 1943, possibly later. Anyone have any info on this unit?
