Here in this view you see the heavy insulation around the high pressure steam pipes. This was for two reasons - one, to protect the "black gang" - the ship's engineers - from burns from the high heat steam, but also to help prevent and locate leaks, which were powerful enough to cut through flesh once they left the pipe through a small hole.
