Sound-powered telephones allow large ships to communicate with their various departments even when the electricity had failed. Magnetos and selector switches would ring bells when power was available, but in the event of major power failure, you would connect your headset to these panels, which also had similar circuits in vital areas of the ship. They were started up during combat so that communication would be maintained without interruption in the event of battle damage.
