IPTC: Caption US Army Captain James Johnson of Newark, New Jersey, a physician attached to the 1st Cavalry Division, works to save former Prime Minister, Imperial Japanese Army Major General Hideki Tojo after suicide attempt, September 11, 1945. Capt. Johnson was assisted by First Lieutenant Frank Aquino of Los Angeles. California and Technical Sergeant Dominic Santa Cruz of Westfield, New Jersey. Japanese doctor Tamejmitsu Ebara had administered first aid and made Tojo comfortable, moving him from the chair he attempted suicide in to a futon. The bullet passed through his chest and exited his back. Six hours after the suicide attempt, he arrived at the U.S. ArmyÕs 98th Evacuation Hospital in Yokohama, still alive after a number of transfusions of American-donated blood. He lived to be tried and convicted in the International Military Tribunal for the Far East. He was hanged on December 22, 1948.
