summary details
IPTC: Caption The fourth floor of the Hiroshima Savings Bureau, 1750 yards (1600 meters) shows burns to the walls where the flash of the atomic attack (7,000 degrees (3870 degrees Celsius) at the hypocenter) seared the outline of the window frames into the masonry. The window sill is relatively intact, despite a fire that consumed the interior. Hundreds of children were completely incinerated working outside the Bureau. The night of the bombing, a pregnant woman gave birth in the basement, attended by wounded survivors. Author Sadako Kurihara commemorated the birth with the poem "Umashimenkana Genshibakudan Hiwa" (We Shall Bring Forth New Life: An Unknown Atomic Bomb Story") which was republished to acclaim in Japan in 1981. The photo was made by a Japanese survey team. IPTC: Copyright Notice Caption ©2007 MFA Productions LLC Please Do Not Duplicate or Distribute Without Permission
