summary details
IPTC: Caption Fast Transport 1st Class T-11 down by the stern and sinking. T-11 was part of convoy TA Number 8 under Vice Admiral Denshichi Okochi, including Akagisan Maru, Hakuba Maru, Shinsei Maru No. 5 And Nichiyo Maru. They carried 4,000 soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army's 68th Independent Mixed Brigade (from the 35th Army). T-11 was also an escort, with IJN destroyers Ume, Momo and Sugi (Destroyer Division 43) and subchasers Nos. 18 and 38, commanded by Captain Ryokichi Sugama. Seven previous convoys had landed reinforcements on Leyte using the same tactics, They landed their force at San Isidro Bay when they heard about 80 American ships landing at Ormoc Bay. The 68th had only two artillery pieces and little rations, ammunition, or medical supplies because of constant air attacks from 5th Air Force and Marine Corps F4Us from VMF 211, VMF 218, and VMF 313. 375 Japanese were killed. All the transports were sunk at anchor and Ume and Sugi were damaged. Momo hit a reef while the surviving ships returned to Manila that night.
