Wing of a Japanese Navy Type 97 Nakajima B5N2 carrier attack aircraft ("Kate") that crashed at the Naval Hospital, Pearl Harbor, during the attack. This plane came from the aircraft carrier Kaga. Its "Rising Sun" insignia has been largely cut away by souvenir hunters. Private First Class Marion M. Milbrandt, summoned to the Naval Hospital grounds with his 1,000-gallon water pumper, found that one of Kaga's Kates Ñ struck by machine gun fire from the ships moored in the Repair Basin Ñ had crashed near there. The resulting fire, fed by the crashed plane's gasoline, threatened the facility, but Milbrandt and his crew controlled the blaze. The Japanese lost five B5N2 bombers during the first wave. The aircrew killed were Syuzo Kitahara, Kenichi Kumamoto, Yoshiharu Machimoto, Yoshizo Masuda, Isamu Matsuda, Tsuneki Morita, Izumi Nagai, Nafikatsu Ohashi, Toshio Onishi, Yoshio Shimizu, Mitsumori Suzuki, Hidemi Takeda, Tomoharu Takeda, Yonetaro Ueda, and Nobuo Umezu. The Japanese lost twenty-four other planes were lost during the raid.
